« Voyage sur une autre planète » : les lecteurs et assistants de français dans les facultés soviétiques vus par eux-mêmes (1958-1991)

Abstract : This paper analyses the exchange stays and work of French lecturers and language assistants in the USSR from 1958 to 1991. The research focuses on the specificities of the Franco-Soviet educational and linguistic cooperation in the context of the Cold War. By drawing on interviews and correspondence with former participants, I trace the everyday life of French teachers in the Soviet Union. I observe the difficulties facing them, such as surveillance, censorship, isolation and travel bans. I question the educational efficiency, methods and status of the French teachers in higher education institutions, as well as the causes of the eventual failure of their teaching missions. Finally, I examine the cases of successful stays and look for adaptation strategies for those participants.
