Une lecture socio-clinique du processus de normalisation à l’hôpital

Abstract : A rationalization process that strengthens the regulatory framework of nursing activities has been undertaken at the hospital since the 1980s. This paper discusses the aim of these changes based on both clinical sociology and psychosociology with Niklas Luhmann’s systems theory. We see these changes as an expression of complex logics that install control mechanisms that are no longer linked to individual decisions. If successful, this process would bypass the issue of choice by defining the alignment to a norm established from a sample of establishments with the consent of stakeholders’ representatives as natural. Normalization is characterized by abstraction. Practices will disconnect from real-life situations. The norm sets a paradoxical dynamic. On the one hand, it unifies and provides order. On the other hand, it is opposed to the medical power embodied in the act.
