Pour une autre conversion : la spiritualité antique et l’ontologie critique de nous-mêmes à partir des derniers cours de Michel Foucault

Abstract : In this article I figure how Foucault tried to elaborate tools to think the modern form of relation to oneself differently by using antique sources. By doing this Foucault proposes a method to make the historical a critical ontology of ourselves as subjects who inherited from the modern event in the history of thought. He proposes a way to inherit from the past and a method to evaluate the importance of this historical heritage. At the Collège de France, Foucault had started a series of courses on the question of subject and truth. I focus on Foucault’s gesture in the courses on L’Herméneutique du Sujet. With this gesture Foucault tries to bring something like another conversion to oneself out of the antique spirituality. He finds it at the intersection of the christian metanoïa and the platonician or gnostic epistrophè. This other conversion does not involve any breaking of the relation to oneself nor a splitting of the world, but a " displacement of the subject". This transformation opens a " distance from oneself " that makes it possible to proceed this other conversion in which the subject constitutes himself by this gesture in which one looks back to oneself as being the distance from oneself. In this operation, the subject is thought as an active ethopoïetic process instead of a substance or anything given a priori. At the end I would like to bring light on how Foucault elaborates tools of thinking that makes it possible to avoid the use of dialectical synthesis and historical hermeneutics in favour of an early risen thought that gives importance to greatness and historical creativity. This mode of thought does not make conclusions without opening on alterity by affirming the risky part inherent in the future.
