Abstract : In this article I treat notions of time, authority, tradition, and narrative in search of an elusive concept: democratic legitimacy. Using both the theory of 'gift' as a form of exchange resistant to transaction and the idea of 'fugitive democracy', I argue for a dynamic relation between past democratic successes and future challenges.
